Samantha Pleet SS12 Presentation: Does You Inspire You

Sep17

Brooklyn designer, Samantha Pleet, debuted her namesake collection in 2006, combining new and old concepts from art, literature, and music. Having since expanded her namesake label to stockists worldwide while collaborating with Urban Outfitters on Rapscallion by Samantha Pleet, this young designer brought New York another season of dynamic inspiration.

Amongst champagne rounds in The Highline Loft, last Saturday’s presentation displayed water-color body suits, twist-knot rompers, and polished trenches.  A blend of coy cutouts and hints of menswear enticed the Francophile within as Pleet’s customized soundtrack, a collaboration with Caroline Polachek from Chairlift, crooned to a crowd of industry insiders and admirers.

National Steam Punk Day

Nov19

On Sunday, October 22, our little borough of Brooklyn was the proud host of National Steam Punk Day. And lucky for them, we were just curious enough to leave our lovely island and check it out.

Steam Punk is a growing trend that is essentially Victorian science fiction. Or, vintage Lara Croft.

The event boasted turn of the century garb paired with metallic goth pieces such as deconstructed watches, large bullet-turned-necklaces, and even… goggles? Yes, goggles. Needless to say, this is a trend that some people live and breathe by, but there are still ways to introduce smaller inspiration pieces into your daily wardrobe.

The focus of the event was a fashion show featuring Steam designers and a performance from Lolalola’s dance group. There were also readings, a vintage photo booth and a ton of yummy vendors to purchase your Steam Punk accessories.

One of our personal favorite vendors was Victoria von Boom Boom of RockLove. Beyond making cool things, even for actual rockers like Twisted Sister and Courtney Love, she was actually quite a fox too.

To check out her goodies (such as the rubber bracelets made from tire parts that you roll on like a condom) visit her website http://www.rocklovedesigns.com/.

While we can’t imagine Steam Punk taking over next month’s Vogue, we wouldn’t be shocked if a few key pieces snuck their way in. (We are hoping those lace masks will have a dual purpose.) So be sure to swing by the convention next year. Since it has doubled in size from last year, we have high hopes for the next one!

Fashion's Night Out

Aug16

The initial event listing has finally been released for the return of Fashion's Night Out on September 10, 2010. While additions are bound to be made in the next 24 days, we have created an anticipatory list of parties that might even make Anna smile.

3.1 Phillip Lim - Phillip will be making an appearance at his Mercer Street store on September 10, 6pm to 9pm. Afterwards, he will join the Rag and Bone team for a street-side party. With performances by My Gold Mask, Lim maintains the chic party aura he established back in 2007.

Alice + Olivia - Are you willing to brave Midtown for FNO? Are you mystifyingly tall and thin? If you answered yes to both of these questions, head over to 80 W. 40th Street for Fashion's Night Out to win a chance to be in the Alice + Olivia S/S11 runway show.

ALTER - If you're a Brooklynite at heart and love a good Photo Booth party, the Fashion's Night Out event at ALTER will suit your needs. Sip champagne and check out the newly unveiled collections at 140 Franklin Street this September 10th.

Twinkle by Wenlan - Twinkle by Wenlan will be teaming up with Coclico to celebrate FNO for a night filled with champagne, shopping, and surprises. After Twinkle's solid show last season, Wenlan is certainly a designer to keep on your radar.
