Occupying the Neighborhood

Oct11

Since I moved into FiDi about a year-and-a-half ago, there have been quite a few transformations in the neighborhood. The Fulton opened, Andre Balazs' sexification of 5 Beekman quietly began, and, of course, Wall Street gained its most recent set of 'occupants.'

Let's be honest, fashion week has experienced its fair share of protests too.The problem is that activists just don't understand how to command attention in this industry: Throw a party - not a protest. We'll be much happier to hear what you have to say after our second hour of open bar.

Models, Ghosts, and Betsey's T+A

Sep14

I sat down in Lincoln Center's Theatre on Monday evening distracted with heartbreak for narrowly missing Norman Ambrose's show. Although it hadn't been the first show I missed this season, it was certainly one of the more anticipated young designers on my schedule.

Then, the booming sounds of City Grrrl by CSS quickly ejected me out of my disappointment. Betsey Johnson's show had begun.

Betsey's daughter, Lulu, took to the runway, for the first time in 10 years, in a sexy, Brigitte Bardot-themed collection. Circling to songs like Ice Cream by New Young Pony Club, Lulu feigned bashfulness when the crowd cheered – that is, until mother dearest entered center stage dancing to Ass & Titties by DJ Assault.

Not a bad Monday, wouldn't you say?

Our Tuesday started with a mystifying presentation by Improvd. The dramatic collection was a crowd-pleaser with its dark elegance and theatrical choreography.

We then left Lincoln Center and headed down to The Lambs Club for the relaunch of Models by Michael Gross. With Nicole Miller, Carmen Dell’Orefice, and Robert DiMauro on the guest list, we partied as if the re-rerelease was its first. After picking up my copy of Models, I bumped into the controversial author himself.

“Ohhh, you’re young! A newbie in this industry,” Michael Gross cooed, “They’re going to chew you up and spit you out in a heartbeat!”

"Don't say that!" I replied defensively.

“Oh, no, babe. I know for a fact. Because in my day, I would have been one of those who would have done that!”

Taking Michael’s advice to heart, I switched gears and preceded downtown for the Holy Ghost! Fashion Week Party at the Tribeca Grand Hotel. Daniel Franzese was loitering out front with friends, discussing his new role in Jersey Shoresical, a musical poking fun at the reality show. Inside, fans danced wildly as they were instructed to hold on… and hold tight.

Bedlam, Binetti, and the faces of Betsey

Feb14

As the last designer bowed out after her finale on Friday, the DL darlings took that cue to celebrate. Seconds after finishing up our final words for Sally LaPointe’s coverage, Nick, Madisen, and I wandered over to Bedlam for the Nomia afterparty. While enjoying our fair share of vodka sodas, we admired taxidermy decor, shared photos from our shows, and literally stumbled into Alan Cumming.

Needless to say, making it to General Idea the following morning was not easy – but it happened. The menswear collection was inspired by the letter-M, from the consonant’s shape to the words “mountain” and “military.”

After camping out in the Studio, I headed over to Binetti’s presentation in The Box. The first phrases jotted down in my pad were “foreign opulence” and “luxury safari.” And before you even ask: Yes, I would wear an ostrich-fringe silk-layered dress while hunting a tiger at the Ivory Lodge. Or maybe a beaded caftan.

Thirty-six photos later, I ambled out of The Box to grab yet another life-saving Starbucks. Betsey Johnson was holding a very animated interview a few feet away. At this point, I knew a phone call was necessary, “Nick, wake the hell up. You’re missing shows. And the many faces of Betsey.”

FNO: Betsey Johnson

Sep10

Remember Betsey's crazy 68th birthday party that she threw about a month ago? Relive the madness at her Soho store tonight during Fashion's Night Out. Those brave enough to venture through her tourist-filled neighborhood will enjoy makeovers, photography by Shannon Sinclair, and a free gift with purchase. In true Betsey style, live music and booze will also keep customers packed inside her brightly decorated store.
