Runway Revision

May31

After Saturday's success at Runway SOHO, I made a return visit to Lynn Cohen's boutique on 450 Broome Street. With a trifling desire to experiment, I grabbed a beverage and submitted to Lynn's expert inquisition.

Pairing black-and-white striped pants with a convertible cross-top, Runway SOHO's designer revealed her commitment to versatility: "I like to make pieces that can be worn multiple ways," she explained.

From nautical-lite to Ziggy Stardust-glamboyance, I later paired this functional piece with a black tank and an immoral shade of red lipstick for Sunday's Bowie-inspired party, Oh! You Pretty Things at Le Poisson Rouge.

Your Soho Runway

May29

As I spent my Saturday shopping in the unacquainted sun, the season’s newfound heat drove me into an air conditioned shop on the corner of Broome and Mercer. With eclectic décor and racks of unique pieces arranged by hue, Runway SOHO had a one-of-a-kind feel, despite its dangerous proximity to Broadway’s mass-market stores.

The engaging sales associate immediately approached, asking if we needed anything to drink – and he clearly implied “anything”, considering there were bottles of champagne with the appropriate stemware on cue for whoever requested. He took us through the boutique, explaining the concept of Runway SOHO and highlighting some of their exceptional pieces.

The store’s objective is to offer clients distinctive apparel that is locally designed and produced. In fact, the clothing’s origin is so local, that almost everything is created inside the shop. Runway SOHO employs a team of qualified stylists, personal shoppers, and in-house tailors who are prepared to improve your wardrobe while maintaining your personal style.

So, I decided to give this a whirl:

I was looking for a long, casual dress that was not dry-clean only. I wanted a flowing summer look that was safe against Water Street winds and impromptu boat excursions. Lastly, it had to look appropriate with stilettos

Success.

Lynn Cohen, the designer and owner of Runway SOHO, will be one of your accommodating fashion guides at 450 Broome Street. Having designed apparel for 35 years, you can be assured you are in competent hands. So sit back, grab a glass of bubbly, and prepare to be impressed in Soho.

Cosmonaut Grechko's Summer Anthems

May28

By virtue of the a) amazing weather and b) the fact that I successfully left the house in short-shorts and a mesh tanktop and drank in McCarren Park, District L hereby claims May 28th, 2011 to be the official first day of summer here in New York. With this transition, naturally, comes a new playlist in the DL library - by the looks of things, it would appear that we've already found a front-runner for our summer anthem fix.

Enter 20 year old Russian producer Victor Klyuchnikov, better known as electronic artist Cosmonaut Grechko. One of three flagship artists with the Teenage Gang Records label (also featuring Brazil's Druma Kina and Swiss act Show Your Shoe), Grechko produces sounds that drip of hazy summer days and tipsy rooftop escapades at dusk.

Walking home from a racuous bout of day-drinking to take a quick disconap before heading out on a sizzling Saturday? Bam. Post-coital languorousness on a steamy Sunday? Done. This is well-produced chillwave at it's finest - we dare you to protest otherwise.

The Vagaries of Fashion

May28

How did I ever overlook this fantastic gem? The Vagaries of Fashion, shot by Miles Aldridge, appeared in the September 2007 issue of Vogue Italia.

I had NO IDEA that Vogue Italia wrote parenting guides. I've never been into the idea of motherhood... but thanks to Aldridge, I now know that I'd do just fine.

Viva la labyrinth!

From White Noise to Fashion Forward, Kirill to DJ Keiichiro -- the current look of New York’s seasonal transition encourages clash and mixed media. Whether the genre is edgy glamrock or soft bohemian, going beyond controlled chaos is the new common goal.
