Obesity and Speed

Apr30

After Thursday’s midday sunshine turned into an apocalyptic downpour, many practical people of New York abandoned their evening plans. But the rest of us went to OAK for a party hosted by Obesity and Speed.

The New York-based brand paired with Kanon Organic Vodka, successfully littering Bond Street with fashion’s junior mafia, models-turned-musicians, and 24hour party people.

Hump Day.

Apr27

Wednesday. Just another day at the office.

There's nothing like some throwback Balenciaga to spice up the mid-week monotony.

The Emperor’s Old Clothes

Apr26

Rumor has it that Lybian dictator, Muammar El-Qaddafi, has two goals: First, to regain control of his country, and to then take over the Met.

The stone-faced leader apparently believes he has a twinkle of style behind those baggy, expressionless eyes. T Magazine published a letter sent by Libya’s Minister of Culture, which expresses Qaddafi's desire to exhibit his wardrobe in the Met and boasts the leader's “3400 items of breathtaking sartorial magnificence.”

Right.

I’m sure the dictator’s closet holds expensive duds, but they’ll never become an exhibit at the Met. Face it, Qaddafiyou’ll never make it in the New York fashion scene. And here’s why:

1. No one knows how to spell your name. Gaddafi? Qaddafi? Gadhafi? Your name shows up five different ways in a single news report. Imagine what a nightmare that would be during Fashion Week check-in:

“Hmm… sorry, Muammar… I can't find you on the list. But if you’d step aside, maybe we can squeeze you into standing room. Maybe.”

2. The fashion industry isn’t so keen on genocide. Don’t believe us? Just ask John Galliano.

3. We’re an industry sponsored by booze. And you, bright-eyed hopeful, banned this delicious social lubricant in Libya. Good luck trying that shit over here. Kim Crawford would destroy you.

4. You’re passé. Elie Saab already did the whole ‘all-gold’ thing four years ago. You had your chance. It’s over. Besides, Elie Saab is from Lebanon and you’ve certainly burned that bridge by now.

5. Internship required. What’s that? Never made a coffee run for Marc Jacobs? Never maintained itineraries for Vogue’s entire editorial staff? Inexperienced job-seekers need not apply.

It’s ok – the fashion industry isn’t for everyone! While it’s obvious you had been working on your unaffected-model-pout and Zahm-like shade collection, perhaps it's time to consider a new career path.

April Showers

Apr25

Precipitation Admiration?

While the rest of us are dodging pond-sized puddles and umbrella tips to the eye, the Burberry beauties are looking sleek and bright in cinched raincoats, generous shades, and -that's right- white pants.

Fashion never intended to be realistic, anyway.

It doesn't seem like this chic duo is valiently sidestepping indolent parka-donning tourists in the Garment District. So, as we spend the morning commute protecting our most recent Pimps and Pinups masterstroke,  Christopher Bailey paints a much more desirable dream for April.

Tequila and Nail Polish

Apr23

This Tuesday, District L will be attending Sauza Tequila's "Ladies Who Brunch" event, hosted by expert party planner, Cathy Riva. When you're invited to enjoy fresh margaritas, express manicures, and chair massages, you cannot say no.

Riva, who's built her career by throwing top-notch soirees for socialites and making informative appearances on NBC's The Today Show, will be put to the DL test.

Because, let's face it, we know a good party.

Mordekai

Apr20

After arriving home from an aneurysm -inducing day at the office, there is nothing more satisfying than plucking an edgy new lookbook from the pile of bills and junkmail in our mailbox. Mordekai by Ken Borochov provided more than enough fiery intensity to pull me from that post-work slump.

The New York-based stylist revealed his collection of scepters, ammunition necklaces, and noir feather headdresses -- all charged with a controversial take on power. With an underlying focus on sexual, religious, and political influence, Borochov was inspired to design pieces that would enhance his editorial shoots.

The line, which Ken describes as “extreme adornment,” will soon be available on his website.

Now it's time to nab that crown...

Brunch and Repeat

Apr18

The weekend began with EFFEN vodka and edgy electronic beats by Savoy – and it ended with Sunday’s sidewalk visit to Hulbert Waldroup, the infamous artist on West Broadway. Toss in a few glasses of champagne, a brunch session at Freemans, one major OAK sale, and a lazy afternoon at the Tribeca Grand Hotel

No amount of youth is being wasted on these PYTs.

And if the rumors are true, spring is right around the corner. Toss your winter coats into storage and prepare to match your wardrobe to that new abundant social calendar:

Brunch at Marc Forgione: Two-Toned Heels by Kathryn Amberleigh (219 Mott Street)

Art Shopping on West Broadway: Crescendo Dot Dress by Lois Eastlund (153 Ludlow Street)

Nighttime Rooftop Pregame: Impact Silk Crop Jacket by Stylein (EVA New York)

Cool Confusion.

Apr15

Yeah, we don't know how to dress for this indecisive weather either. Shake down the nearest New York weatherman and demand answers.
