Balmain Sows its Wild Oats

Feb17

We all remember Balmain from Spring 2009 RTW.

I am still in love with the exaggerated shoulder- designers taking potentially detrimental risks with silhouette that ultimately payoff is refreshingly exciting. The peaked shoulder that Balmain generously dosed his collection with last season was high energy, dramatic, and lent an air of superiority to the given look.

It also looks like it lent an air of inspiration to some of our designer friends this season:

No collection seems to have taken the Balmain look to the degree that Max Azria did with Herve Leger this season- at least 16 looks featured this risky revamp on that 80's trend some of us think back on and purse our lips disapprovingly over. But the collection was well executed, streamlined, and gratifyingly chic. William Rast and Miss Sixty too took heed from Balmain and threw a few instances of peaked shoulder into their lines- seeing this influence in William Rast was especially surprising, as who would expect to hear Justin Timberlake and Balmain in the same sentence?
